The Lech B±dkowski Gimnazjum no. 48 in Gdańsk was established by the City Council in 2001 and started its work in the same year. Mrs Elżbieta Radomska has been the headteacher while Mrs Barbara Gwizdała has been the deputy head since then.
IThe Lech B±dkowski Gimnazjum no. 48 occupies a modern and spacious building. It has got facilities required by disabled students such as: a lift, a wheelchair ramp and specially-equipped toilets. In the school there are following rooms: 11 classrooms, 4 laboratories (for Physics, Chemistry, Craft and Technology, Biology and Geography), 1 computer laboratory with access to the Internet, a school library, a reading room, 2 gymnasia ( for team sports and for bodybuilding), a sports field, a day-care room, a educationalist’s office, a therapist’s office, a nurse’s office and a canteen with fully-equipped kitchen base.
Education in our school lasts three years and engages teenagers aged 14-16. There are lessons 5 days a week, from Monday to Friday. The lessons start at 8 am and finish at 3 pm. They last 45 minutes with breaks 5 or 10 minutes long. There are 2 longer breaks (15-minute and 20-minute one) which enable students to eat lunch in the canteen.
There are 16 obligatory subjects such as: Polish, Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, History, Contemporary History, Craft and Technology, Art, Music, Information Technology, Physical Education, Religious Education, English and German. There are also numerous extra-curricular classes that encourage students to develop their interests and abilities. Among the activities there are: sports meetings, Drama lessons, Art lessons, school choir, European Club and clubs developing knowledge in the area of the obligatory subjects.
Our school permits the integration of children with special needs. There are classes in which disabled students can learn in the mainstream in an atmosphere of friendliness, acceptance and tolerance. The disabled work with a help from a special teacher who supports them during lessons. They are taught in accordance with individually written curricula considering their special needs. Moreover, our school supports mathematically and linguistically talented students creating classes specializing in English and Maths. In the classes the students are taught in accordance with individually written Maths or English curricula considering their talents. The linguistic classes have 4 English lessons a week (one extra lesson in comparison to the curricular teaching).
In our school there are 18 forms, 6 for each year. There are 20 to 30 students in each form, about 480 in the whole school (254 girls and 226 boys). Our students live in the neighbouring estates and city outskirts. They come from educationally, professionally and financially diversified families.
Fifty two teachers work in the Lech B±dkowski Gimnazjum no. 48 in Gdańsk. They specialize in a variety of areas. Some of them are educated to work with children with special needs. Others are educated to teach two subjects. The majority improves their qualifications taking part in numerous courses, workshops and postgraduate studies. There are also a nurse and two therapists to help students at school.
The mission of the school is to educate students as citizens of the world, citizens of Poland and citizens of the region. The process of education in our school is motivated by tolerance, respect for humanistic and moral values and openness towards other cultures and traditions.
